Where are we with Artificial Intelligence?
Are the machines about to take over, as portrayed in Terminator? Or will they be willing slaves inside our phones and smart devices, spending their day finding things they think might be interesting to us?
Should we listen to the doomsayers – like Elon Musk and Stephen Hawkings – who think we need to take a pause before we pursue this technology any further?
Our speaker is Professor Bruce Watson, Head of the Department of Information Science at Stellenbosch University. He founded FST Labs, which develops and owns several high-performance technologies for applications such as network security, bio-informatics, chip design (EDA), and computational linguistics. He is an expert in performance-oriented computing (pattern matching, indexing, compilers) and a self-confessed, optimistic futurist.
